Of course I clarified the butter (it's the butter fat that burns) and the supplied candles seemed to be a little smaller than the candle holder itself. Perhaps if one uses the larger tealights they might be too big and cause some scorching. There were nine of us, we all had our own butter warmers which remained lit throughout the dinner and no one's got too hot, burned, scorched.....just perfect. serviceable   May 12, 2009 M. Timm These butter warmers do exactly what you need them to do. They are definately adequate to keep everyone's butter warm . I had seen past reviews of the flame scorching the bottom of the ramakin and this did happen to one of mine.
