The instructions clearly state not to use in water, and the tines are not designed for inserting into hard ground. I use a chopstick to punch holes into soil then insert the device pressing soil around the tines. If one follows the instructions all the tests are clearly decisive. I've used a chemical measuring set for checking garden soil until now. After bouncing those readings off this electronic device found both within a very narrow range to nearly identical. For me the advantages of using this product are its ease, no mess and avoiding chemical restock costs. If handled and maintained properly the Luster Leaf 1818 tester should provide years of economical, reliable use. M N   July 22, 2010 M N (St. Paul, mn USA) Did not work on arrival! Minimal instructions, save your money. The first time I used it the meter failed to show results in any mode. If it comes in concact with water it loses calibration. There is not any included info to recalibrate. I have not had time to contact manufacturer for a remedy. Caution in dense or tough soil   July 17, 2010 KP The Luster Leaf 1818 Rapitest Mini soil tester works great. But, I had to epoxy the probes to keep them from pushing into the case when you insert the probes into dense soil. I had read that other users experienced this problem, so I knew to expect this. The product works great otherwise. junk   June 28, 2010 Darrick I'm not as "HAPPY" as other customers, the needle hasn't moved no matter how much light is on,or using different soil with different ph still reads the same.
